Convert subtitles between SRT, VTT and ASS/SSA — free, in your browser
Sometimes the subtitle file you have isn’t the one your player, editor, or website wants. A web page needs WebVTT, your TV wants SRT, an anime release came as ASS. You can convert subtitles between SRT, VTT and ASS/SSA free — right in your browser, with nothing uploaded and no account.
Convert a subtitle file in two steps
- Drop your
.srt,.vtt,.assor.ssafile on the PGSExtract upload page. The format is detected from the content, not just the extension. - Pick the output format and download. Every pairing of the four formats works, in both directions.
That’s the whole flow. The conversion runs entirely in your browser — the file never leaves your machine, which also means it’s instant and completely private.
What carries over (and what doesn’t)
Every cue and its exact timing survives any conversion. The one thing to know about is styling:
- SRT ↔ VTT — near-lossless in both directions; both are plain-text cue formats.
- ASS/SSA → SRT or VTT — every line and timestamp carries over, but ASS’s rich styling (fonts, colours, positioning, karaoke effects) flattens into plain text, because the plainer formats can’t express it. The app shows a note whenever a conversion is lossy like this.
- SRT or VTT → ASS/SSA — all cues carry over into a well-formed ASS file with a default style you can edit further.
Converting tracks straight out of a video
If your subtitles are still inside an MKV or MP4 rather than a bare file, you don’t need to extract first and convert second — pick the output format next to the track and it downloads converted. See how to extract text subtitles from an MKV and how to extract subtitles from an MP4.
Image-based tracks — Blu-ray PGS, DVD VOBSUB, broadcast DVB — are a different story: the words are pictures, so they need OCR first. See image-based vs text-based subtitles explained if you’re not sure which kind you have.
